The Great Egg Race – oh you think it’s over!

23 April 2013

Well it is for this year, but it will be back!! Preparations can start now, and looking at some of the designs this year, there has been some serious planning going on behind closed doors (in some cases).

The 5th Annual St Mary Magdalene Scout Group Great Egg Race Competition (STMMSGGERC),– boy we are really good at catchy roll of the tongue names , was held last night at St Mary’s Centre. The event sponsored by Cadbury’s Creme Egg (well it should be..) was another smashing (not the eggs, that’s why they are Creme ones) success.

The build your vehicle out of junk material with no advance preparation competition. I think there was some bending of the rules on that point – who was it forming copper pipe on the new gas hob over the weekend then!!. Anyway the main idea being to see who can transport the appropriate Cadbury’s Creme Egg as far as possible with only the power of an elastic band, which must accompany the vehicle. In addition there is the Usain Bolt speed competition, the Clive Sinclair design, and Hot Rod style awards, the latter awards for those who like me don’t do any preparation what so ever – and their vehicle collapses at the start line!

The fanatic build stage, there is always a very strict time allowed to build your vehicle. This year the final 10 minutes warning was only issued 2 times (I think) and the final 3 minutes – well I was eggtremely glad I wasn’t holding my breath. So in normal tradition we finished late, but who was timing (a question I was asked a few times!).

It is then into the competition arena, for the final moment of truth – is it that wonderful moment as your egg is seen moving gracefully down the runaway (ok – hall floor), or that deep embrassment as the vehicle falls sideways or turns and runs the wrong way.

This year that was a mixture of records broken, I particularly liked the use of Joe Dolcee “Shaddap You Face” 12inch been broken to build one vehicle, and then transporting that now infamous Cadbury’s Creme Egg (still pushing for sponsorship) up and down the hall 3 times a distance of about 40 metres.  Note to self bigger venue next year!

The Usain Bolt category, was won a slightly different manner, with the quickest time for travelling no distance at all!!! – As always the Judges decision is final! Thanks Andy as always.

For the last two categories – take a look at the pictures and judge for yourselves!

As for naming the winners, well to protect those potentially embarrassed by their inefficient design, I have decided not to list the category winners. In addition, to be honest I forgot to write them down, and really we all won – as we all got …………….

You guessed it a CADBURY’S CREME EGG

Thanks for everyone for taking part. Roll on next year! Get designing

Ian.
